President Prabowo Subianto has assured the public that the Indonesian government considered various factors before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. He stressed that the main objective of the talks was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, especially the nation’s workers. Prabowo stated, “We have conducted thorough assessments and negotiations. My utmost priority is the well-being of our people, and we must safeguard our workers.”
Despite the complexities involved, Prabowo highlighted that Indonesia maintained a steadfast position throughout the negotiations. “We have set our stance and made our offer. We cannot compromise further, but ensuring the protection of our workers is paramount,” he emphasized. The president also expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economy, noting its strength, resilience, and ability to withstand global uncertainties, including trade tensions.
Regarding the discussions on tariffs with the U.S., Prabowo characterized the negotiations as challenging yet fruitful. Both sides arrived at a mutual understanding by recognizing each other’s strategic interests. “We have acknowledged their priorities, and they have acknowledged ours. This mutual understanding led to an agreement,” Prabowo explained. He also mentioned the reduction of tariffs from 32% to 19%, achieved through continuous negotiations, even with the tough negotiating tactics of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Earlier, President Trump announced a trade agreement with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%. Prabowo emphasized the significance of prioritizing the people and workers throughout the negotiations, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding their interests.
